Abia Reporters

After Amokachi made a comment that Mikel is the greatest Nigerian footballer, it sparked up debate on radio sports shows and other media. My reaction was that Okocha is the greatest. He was magical on the pitch, a sight to behold with his mesmerizing skills. Some were of the opinion that Mikel has won trophies and that should be the basis for the crown of the greatest. There are lot of players that were ‘favoured’ to be part of teams that won trophies, while some were great but ‘unlucky’. One can make an appearance of 120 minutes in an entire season and still be part of a team that won trophies. If Mikel and Okocha were on the bench and a substitution is needed. As a coach, I would put Okocha on the field.

Another player came into the picture that changed my previous decision. I knew he was great but I never knew he won more trophies than Mikel. When you combine skillful, influential on the field and trophies won, there’s no doubt he is the greatest. His name is Kanu Nwankwo.
Kanu won the Nigerian premier league with Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Eredivisie with Ajax three times in a row, UEFA Champions league and Super cup with Ajax. Won UEFA cup with Intermilan, 2 English Premier league titles with Arsenal (of course, part of the invincible squad), 2 FA cups with Arsenal and 1 FA cup for Portsmouth. FIFA U17 World cup, Olympic Gold medal(Atlanta 96). Twice African footballer of the year.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you. Kanu Nwankwo, the Greatest of all times Nigerian footballer.
