MTN, Airtel, Globacom emerge Nigeria’s top three GSM operators, based on market share — NCC

The MTN, Airtel, Globacom have emerged as Nigeria’s top three GSM operators, based on market share, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.

In its just-released Subscriber/operator data, the Commission disclosed that MTN controls 74,044,687, representing 39.66 percent, while Airtel and Globacom control, 50,026,788 and 49,781,215, representing 26.80 percent and 26.66 per cent respectively.

The Commission added that Mobile controls 12,842,775, representing 6.88 percent.

However, in a message obtained from its website, MTN, stated: “From the very first phone call, made at Maritime House Apapa on May 16, 2001, we’ve been facilitating connections that matter. Similarly, Aitel also, stated: “Airtel Networks Limited is a leading telecommunications services provider with headquarters in Lagos, the commercial nerve center of Nigeria. The telco ranks amongst the top three mobile service providers in terms of subscribers with a customer base of more than 50 million as of December 2019. The company’s product offerings include 2G, 3G, and 4G wireless services, mobile commerce, Home Broadband, and enterprise services.

“Airtel Networks Limited is a subsidiary of Airtel Africa Plc, a Pan-African telecommunications company with operations in 14 countries across Africa.

However, 9Mobile also stated: “Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd. (EMTS), trading as ‘9mobile, is a Nigerian private limited liability company. EMTS acquired a Unified Access Service License from the Nigerian Communications Commission in 2007. The License enables EMTS to provide Fixed Telephony (wired or wireless), Digital Mobile Services, International Gateway Services, and National/Regional Long Distance Services in addition to spectrum assignments in the 900 and 1800 MHz bands.”
