MRS IKPEAZU VOWS TO CONTINUE FIGHT AGAINST RAPIST, OTHERS, IN ABIA STATE

The wife of Abia State Governor Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu has vowed not to stop at nothing until the issues of rape and other Gender Based Violence are reduced to the barest minimum in and around the state.

Mrs Ikpeazu made this promise through the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Beauty Odikwa, when she received a large group of protesters under the aegis of the State Technical Committee on GBV, the Ministry of Women Affairs, the National Association of Women Journalists, International Federation of Women Lawyers, the National Council of Women Societies, the State Police Gender Desk, and other Civil Society Organizations who joined forces to raise a strong voice against all forms of Gender violence.

She expressed her determination to encourage relevant institutions to take more stringent steps in ensuring that Justice is secured for the victims, leveraging on partnerships with the law enforcement agencies, and all GBV stakeholders.

The protesters led by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs. Onyinyechi Nwachukwu, had undertaken a road show around the State capital to sensitize people on the ills of Gender Based Violence and also to encourage victims to speak out; as speaking out was the first step towards getting healed.

She identified drug and substance abusers as the major perpetrators of rape and all forms of Gender Based Violence and pleaded with the wife of the Governor to facilitate the shutting down of all hard drug retail outlets within the state, stressing that it would help in driving the number of GBV cases down.

Mrs. Nwachukwu thanked Mrs Ikpeazu for her efforts in the fight against Gender Based Violence, recalling especially her provision of a GBV Hotline long before now, where members of society could report cases to and get solutions.
