Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs has recommended counseling and life imprisonment for rapists in the country.

In a protest march against rape in Umuahia, the ministry in collaboration with Abia chapter of National Association of Women Journalists and office of the wife of the state governor, called on governments at all levels to protect women and children from rape.

Accordingly the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Lady Onyinyechi Ebere Chinedum Nwachukwu, advocated for counseling for first offenders and life imprisonment for repeated offenders.

Lady Nwachukwu said she would not recommend any capital punishment as “first offenders can turn to the prodigal son who returned”.

The Permanent Secretary attributed the urge to rape to use of drug and urged parents, especially women to “take care of their boys and train their girls to eliminate the problem”.

“It appears that Covid-19 lockdown heightened the rape pandemic”, she said and called for helping hands to stop it.

She lamented further, “The rate youths abuse drugs mare their psych. It is also as a result of misplaced priority by men who are supposed to offer protection to men, women and children”, adding “we are saying No to rape”.

Lady Nwachukwu called for the establishment of National and State Registers for convicted and identified rapists where their identities and pictures would be displayed, adding that this would serve as a deterrent for potential rapists.

She pointed out that her ministry in collaboration with office of the wife of the governor has been sensitizing the public on the issue, and appreciated the State Commissioner of Police, Jane Agbade over her assistance in ensuring that “the pandemic does not continue.
